ASCENT (Advocacy, Social
Skills, Career Exploration and Transitions) is an afternoon social pragmatics
and community life skills training program for persons with developmental
disabilities age 14 to 22. We assist students to become competent in essential
social and every day life skills. A combination of direct instruction
and real world opportunities allow students to practice skills in typical
community life settings. Our young adult staff are trained as mentors
who model appropriate attitudes and expected behavior at all times with
a focus on the individual interests of our young participants. Motivation
to succeed occurs naturally based on emerging friendships in fun filled
settings. We aim to:
- Increase students’
potential to be independent in post school adult life.
- Improve students’
capacity to act acceptably and responsibly.
- Motivate students
to reach their post secondary school vision.
- Work with school
districts to develop and implement post secondary IEP goals and objectives.
